Peony Blossoms (2009-2014)
Inspired by the sensuality of the blossoming peonies in my back yard, I renew these photographs each spring when my peonies are in bloom. I use the digital image as a palette of color and form and re-work the visual material to create an abstraction that resides on the edge of painting and photographic representation.
The Peony Blossom photographs allude to the fullness of life well lived – from the tight bud ready to burst, to full exuberance, and the ultimate, dramatic decine, they are an analogy for the fleeting, transitory, and ephemeral in our lives.
In the context of the modern urban environment, the Peony Blossoms remind us that we are also of the earth, subject to the cycles of nature and the passage of time. They are an expression of my continued interest in nature as a metaphor for our humanity.
