This film is about the fleeting and ephemeral nature of beauty and the passage of time. The poem “Elusive Beauty” by Alice Gonçalves Sousa provided the inspiration for this short piece that reflects prevalent mid-century attitudes about the importance of youth and beauty for a woman. Tango music provides a steady rhythm for the dancers whose movement is slowed down to suggest the changes that take place as part of the aging process. The dance and the words moving across the screen are a metaphor for time passing. The film ends with permutations of the last line of Alice’s poem, an emphatic statement on the message of her words.
